If a scientist ever discovered a way to go anywhere in the universe in an instant, then what?

What would be the implications? Would a space traveler be brave enough to take the journey? Would it be kept quiet as long as possible? Would that scientist be killed and his plans stolen or destroyed because man isn't "ready"? So many questions pop in my head, I wont bore you with more of them.
